Banning Bottled Water is Going Way Too Far

This report from the National Post that the Toronto and Ottawa-Carleton school boards are considering banning the sale of bottled water in their elementary and secondary schools is a sign that governments are going way too far in encroaching on individual prerogative. The nanny state is apparently expanding to the point where it will make it difficult to choose one's own water source.

Let people choose whether or not they want to purchase bottled water, rather than taking away the option. Some people, myself included, prefer the taste of bottled water over tap water (I like the taste of Dasani water the best), and we should not be forced to drink tap water for the school boards to make an irritating environmental statement.

If students find the bottled water too expensive, of poor taste, or environmentally problematic, then those students can drink tap water. I'll stick with the bottle though.

Really....hmmmm - how thoughtful of you.

Yup, just keep building up the garbage - for your benefit.

Unbelievable.

The Nanny state? Ok i agree. Lets legalize smoking (inside buildings), marijuana (usage, production and sale of), child porn (hey just cause you don't like it, your neighbour does), handguns (I want to wear one on my hip like Wyatt Earp did), a 160kph speed limit (just cause your old beater cannot do the speed, my corvette does),lower the drinking age to 14 (works for the French), let the doggies poop where they want (its only natural), put those pesticides back on the lawn (nasty weeds) and bring back bottled water in the schools (lets fill up those American land fill sites!)

way to read the whole article...

if someone wants to bring in their own bottle of dasani, by all means do it. its not outright banning plastic bottles, its the SALE of bottles. big difference there....

I am getting a little tired of all this environmentalism in our schools. For example my son goes to a French high school and his English exam was all about how we can save the environment. I thought they were phasing out religion in Quebec schools, but apparently not for there are constantly projects and lectures from teachers (especially in elementary school) about global warming, etc.

I think the school boards should be more worried about how they are going to meet their budgets with the increase in cost of gas for their fleets of school buses. This means cutbacks in other areas, i.e. textbooks, specialized teachers, maintenance.

K, first, they just finished banning junk food - I presume that included pop.

So now they ban bottled water. What does that leave? Milk? Or juice. But wait. They are both sold in plastic bottles too. Mmm better ban them too. Maybe they should go back to the milk carton - wait. That will kill the trees again.

Second, you prefer Dasani? I guffaw in your general direction! That stuff is filtered Ohio River water! The filthiest river west of the East River! Real nice.

I make a point that whenever I buy bottled water, I only buy local BC water. The finest water in the world. I refuse to buy either Dasani or Aquafina - they are both name brands owned by Coke and Pepsi bottlers and the source is never disclosed. That's just wrong.

My point was not that bottled water is better than tap water, only that the choice should remain up to the consumer to decide and not the school. Just becuase something is available to purchase doesn't mean it needs to be purchased.

Yes, I did read the article and knew that bottled water from exterior sources could still be brought onto school property; my problem is in the school making it harder for consumers to purchase the goods which they so desire. Let the market and supply and demand decide which products get purchased rather than making it more difficult for consumers to exercise choice.
